Motivation In “Endurance”

After reading “Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage” by Alfred Lansing it shows how important it is to have motivation because it can get you through the hard obstacles life throws at you. Motivation gives us a reason for doing things. It gives us a purpose, without purpose we are lost and don’t have meaning. We drift idly with no reason for our everyday actions. When you lose your purpose or meaning you question everything, life becomes dull and boring. Throughout their journey, Shackleton and his crew were put in some hard situations at sea. Despite all of these hardships they’ve been through together, as their leader, Shackleton gave inspiration to the other crew members. This helped them get through life threatening situations by staying positive and productive. He always managed to remain calm and come up with a plan regardless if they were stuck on pack ice or sailing through a bad storm. Although he is the leader, he could not have got through these tough times without his team and having trust in them. When the compass broke he trusted crew member Frank Worsley to navigate them to South Georgia on James Caird. Motivation gives a reason to wake up everyday, to take step after step. To carry burdens, push through pain, to persevere. Without motivation we would just drift the earth aimlessly. Everyone needs motivation it is the driving force of what makes us and how we thrive in society.
