The Paradox of Choice
The more choices we have the more freedom we have, right? I would not fault you for thinking so. As it turns out, however, this isn't the case. Psychologist Barry Schwartz suggests that more choices actually limit our freedom. This is because we divert more cognitive ability towards weighing the choices in our mind. The more choices we have, the less ability we have to process the choices, and the more we experience something known as decision fatigue. Think about when you go to a restaurant. You aren't sure what you want to order, you grow hungrier and hungrier while unable to decide, you become stressed. It is much better for you to not overthink this decision. If you have heard of the term "Analysis Paralysis" this is exactly what it is referring to. Indeed, as it turns out, less is more in this case.
