Self Control


Self Control

"Self control is the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations" (psychologytoday.com). Self control I believe is such an important thing to have. An example of self control would be when you want the last cookie but you use your willpower to avoid eating it because you know it isn't good for you. Self control is very important not only for you, but also for your health and well-being.

  2. Hi Megan,

    As an adult, self control/ self discipline is something that I still find myself struggling with throughout certain situations that take place in my life. As a child during my earlier years, I found it more difficult to understand and to cope with it but now that I am older it's easier to talk myself through certain situations that require the act of self control/ discipline. For example and as mentioned in the youtube video that you provided, self discipline has allowed me to grind out studying and working even when I don't feel like it. When I was in high school I did not care too much about school work and if I was late or skipped class because I was forced to be somewhere that I did not want to be at. Although, once I enrolled in college I became strict on myself to show up and give 100% to each course because I am paying for this education and I am aware that I need this degree in order to get a career and to succeed with my set goals, so that gives me the motivation that is much needed.

  3. Hello Megan,

    I agree with everything you said. Self-control is a very difficult thing to possess and children are not the only ones who struggle with it. Many adults have difficulties with dieting for example because it requires a lot of mental strength (self-control/willpower) to eat healthier foods and cut back on junk food. But as we know, high carb and sugar foods are so intrinsically reinforcing that one needs an abundant amount of self-control in order to diet effectively. That is why obesity is such an issue.

  4. I really like how you mentioned that self control is very important for your health as I feel most do not see the benefits of having good self control. I have learned that obesity is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. due to the many health problems obesity brings and self control plays an important role. Just as you mentioned the cookie, having self control over food can increase your chance to a long happy and healthy life. I enjoyed watching the youtube video as it explained different types of self control. Good job!
