Drug addiction has become a large epidemic in our society today and in past generations. I have personally known people addicted to drugs which resulted in losing people whether it was by death or lost them because of their addiction. No matter what the type of drug it may be, they are all going to negatively affect one's life in some aspect. Drug addiction not only affects the person, but also their loved ones. The video about heroin in this lecture was very impactful because it is believed that no one can use this drug in a recreational manner; it is highly addictive and deadly. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2017, nearly 494,000 people in the United States (12-years old or older) reported using heroin in the past year, which is an estimated rate of 0.2 per 100 persons.2 And in 2015, 81,326 emergency department visits occurred for unintentional, heroin-related poisonings in America, which is an estimated rate of almost 26 per 100,000 people. The statistics are astonishing.

I also found the video to be very powerful. The opioid epidemic in our country and throughout the
ReplyDeleteworld is very frightening. Every day, I read about or hear stories about the lives that drug addiction has affected. The misuse of prescription pain killers has been linked to the heroin and fentanyl addictions. Now that opioid addiction is openly discussed and it is considered to be a public health crisis, hopefully, these alarming statistics will decrease. Finally, healthcare professionals (that is doctors) are being held accountable for over-prescribing opioids to their patients.
I agree with you. I know several people who suffered from different addiction. It is a problem that is need to be further discussed. Having the right knowledge about these topic is very important because it can educate a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI also find this topic very important and something that needs to be changed. I have worked in psych units and have talked to many patients that do drugs regularly and you can see the effect it has on these people. Th addiction takes over their life and withdrawing from their fix makes them crazy. The increase in drug overdoses due to addiction needs to be stopped.
ReplyDeleteI find this topic very significant as well and I completely agree with all the points that were made! Drug addiction is something not to be taken lightly, especially in today's society. This epidemic has, and will continue to affect many generations. Drug abuse and drug addiction is a serious problem. Many peoples' lives are taken away on a daily basis due to drug addiction. Not only does drug addiction affect those suffering from this, but also the ones around them. It is an unfortunate epidemic and change certainly does not happen over night but instead, it is a gradual process. In today's world, drugs have become more and more accessible and it has become a serious problem. Like others, I have met people that have lost their loved ones due to drug addiction and it is certainly unfortunate. Hopefully in the future, there will be effective and possibly permanent solutions to this dilemma.

ReplyDeleteI also found the heroin video to have a great impact, and I too have loved ones that have used heroin. I liked how you included some statistics on those who’ve reported using heroin, or those who’ve unintentionally died from a heroin overdose. The statistics are very scary, but they are important to be able to see that this drug is very dangerous, very addictive, and very hard to withdrawal from, why is why many are dying from overdoses. It is also important to educate the public on these increasing statistics, and possibly look further into what motivates individuals to try such a dangerous drug.
ReplyDeleteI found the herion video to be very intresting. I enjoy the animation in this video and how it told a story without showing alarming imagines.
