Caffeine As a Drug (Site Post #3)

Do you ever crave chocolate, soda, or coffee? We all probably have craved one or more of these foods frequently in our lives. We also have other cravings such as wanting our favorite food or drinks.

Caffeine is the most used psychoactive stimulant in America. Caffeine is widely used because it makes us feel alert, energetic, alive and clear headed. I see a lot of people who require soda or coffee on a daily basis. Many stop in any Wawa or Dunkin Donuts in the morning before work or class to get coffee in the morning. College students often bring coffee or soda to class and some even stay up late studying while drinking caffeine.

We may be all addicted to caffeine but it is also a big business. I wonder what the world would be like if there was no caffeine. Would we just find another drug of choice?

I enjoy drinking soda and iced coffee, although, I try to limit myself to not become addicted. While I am sad that summer is coming to an end, I am looking forward to Dunkin Donut’s Pumpkin Iced Coffee. It is one of my favorite drinks I crave in the Fall.

  1. Caffeine is definitely an interesting drug. It has become so normalized in our culture that many find it hard to believe it is a drug. It's good you are trying to avoid getting dependent on caffeine as I have seen people who are addicted to coffee and it is not pretty. If they don't have their morning coffee I just avoid my caffeine-addicted friends and family. My one friend even resorted to taking caffeine pills which makes it seem even more like a problem. Once it gets to the point where you aren't even enjoying the coffee anymore I think it is time to break that habit and just order decaf.

  2. It's amazing how caffeine is a part of most of the world's everyday life, but yet most do not consider themselves on drugs. It is in fact a drug, that most are addicted to, and don't even realize it. I started drinking coffee at 18 years old, and continued until about 2 years ago. It started with just WaWa, then I tried lattes and cappucinos on the regular. After awhile, I started to realize the effects would last for a shorter period, after every indulgence. Then Starbucks came around, and that's when the addiction started; which became an everyday necessity. This luxury became extremely annoying, expensive, and I developed anxiety; that triggered a problem in my mind. With the symptoms getting worse, I decided there needed to be a change. One day after a bad anxiety attack, I quit coffee cold turkey, and switched to tea only. My anxiety is gone and I have natural energy. You can quit anything you want with willpower.
